Paolo Mascagni, Tab XXIV, From Vasorum Lymphaticorum Corporis Humani Historia et Ichnograhia, 1787

'When Mascagni, a profesor of anatomy at the university of Siena, Italy began studying the human lymph system, only half of the lymphatic vessels were known; he is credited with discovering the other half. Mascagni injected mercury as a contrast medium into cadavers vessels to make them more visible, and carefully dissected around them to chart their courses.'
